UFE is safe and effective, nationwide study shows

February 5, 2007 Doctor’s Guide The 1-year analysis of a registry that included more than 3,000 uterine fibroid embolization procedures indicates that the minimally-invasive therapy is safe and well tolerated, researchers said here at the 19th International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy (ISET). Uterine artery embolization: a treatment option for symptomatic fibroids in postmenopausal women

The authors tested the hypothesis that UAE is an effective treatment option in postmenopausal women with fibroid-related bulk symptoms. The authors retrospectively reviewed a prospectively acquired HI-IQ database. Between 2001 and 2004, 24 women with an average age of 52 years meeting the Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop criteria for menopause underwent UAE for fibroid-related bulk symptoms. Less Invasive Procedure Replaces Fibroid Surgery

NEW YORK – Symptomatic fibroid tumors may be treated with uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), a safe, effective, minimally invasive procedure that may eventually reduce the number of uterine surgeries, according to Robert L. Vogelzang, M.D., professor and chief of vascular and interventional radiology at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. Continue Reading…

SIR: Embolization Effective in Post-Menopausal Fibroids

TORONTO, April 3 – Uterine fibroid embolization, a minimally invasive treatment widely used for pre-menopausal women, can be equally useful after menopause, investigators reported here today. Continue Reading…

Fighting Fibroids-Study Suggests UFE May Help Postmenopausal Women, Too

Gynecologists have been reluctant to suggest uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) to symptomatic menopausal women because they believe fibroids will regress on their own as a result of the changes in their hormone levels. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology does not recommend UFE for the treatment of uterine fibroids in postmenopausal women.

However, a new study suggests that UFE can be useful for postmenopausal women with uterine fibroids, which are also known as myomas or leiomyomas. Continue Reading…

Uterine Fibroid Embolization

As much as 60 percent of the 600,000 hysterectomies performed annually in the U.S. are performed to remove uterine fibroids1 – even though a variety of uterine-saving and less-invasive procedures are available. One of these is an image-guided procedure called uterine fibroid embolization. Continue Reading…

MRI improves uterine fibroid treatment

November 21, 2005 HealthDay News – New research suggests that MRI screening can improve the diagnosis and treatment of uterine fibroids. Researchers at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago studied 100 women and found that MRI improved the selection of patients who should receive non-surgical uterine fibroid embolization to eliminate uterine fibroids. Continue reading…

MRI provides better diagnosis and treatment options for uterine fibroids

November 16, 2005 Science Daily-Research of 100 women suffering from uterine fibroids showed that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) improves the patient selection for who should receive non-surgical uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) to kill their tumors. Research also showed interventional radiologists can use MRIs to determine if a tumor can be embolized, detect alternate causes for the symptoms, identify pathology that could prevent a women from having UFE and avoid ineffective treatments. Continue reading…

MRI shown to improve selection for nonsurgical treatment of uterine fibroids

December 12, 2005 NewsRX – Research of 100 women suffering from uterine fibroids showed that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) improves the patient selection for who should receive non-surgical uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) to kill their tumors, in the November 2005 Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. Complications of Uterine Fibroid Embolization

Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is an increasingly popular, minimally invasive treatment option for women with symptomatic fibroid disease. UFE therapy in qualified hands is an effective, well-tolerated procedure that offers relief of fibroid symptoms with a low risk of complications. In the acute postprocedural period, immediate complications may relate to vascular access, thromboembolic events, infection, and pain management. Continue Reading
